I-35 Bridge Collapses over Mississippi River
At 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday August 1, 2007, cars sat in evening rush hour traffic atop the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis. In a tragic and unexpected turn of events, the bridge collapsed and fell into the Mississippi River. At least seven people died and dozens were injured.
* Eickstadt's semi-truck caught fire shortly after the bridge collapsed. The 51-year-old Mounds View, Minn. man was driving a new route on his way to Mason City, Iowa.
Eickstadt's family now believes he may have purposely steered his truck in front of a school bus before crashing, possibly saving 61 lives in the process and becoming a hero.
-- "I saw this semi-truck and I saw it kind of go in front of us. I thought, 'What is he doing?' The next thing I knew the bridge just went down," said bus passenger Monica Segura the day after the crash.
-- Eickstadt's cousin Carol Kough thinks his intention was to use the truck as a shield between the bus and the destruction.
